Celebrities help to reduce stigma around mental health
We applaud the increase in media attention (often brought by celebrities who have the courage to come forward) on mental health and wellbeing issues over the past few years. Open discussions can break down the unhelpful stigma which sometimes prevents people from getting the help they need.
We have also witnessed brave and inspiring celebrities coming forward to talk publicly about their struggles and what helped them, such as Emma Thompson, Gywneth Paltrow, J K Rowling, Lady Gaga, Ruby Wax and Stephen Fry, to name but a few. And many of us know from the past about Winston Churchill’s “black dog” of depression. This illustrates that it is possible to manage mental health problems and still be successful.
Most famously perhaps, is Prince Harry’s admission of his struggle with grief after his mother died. He and Kate Middleton are doing great things to normalise such issues as depression, anxiety and other mental health conditions.
